The real battle is between the traditions and laws of our constitutional republic where the dignity of the individual is the cornerstone, and a progressive outlook that gives all power to experts and politicians to dictate our laws, create "traditions" of the moment, and subsume the individual. The conservative will pour over the ages of human history and development to more clearly understand the meaning of a single word whereas progressives simply make up new words, new realities, new definitions.
Hi Fred, yes, you've got a good point there. The progressive ideological tradition is a distinctively American-created one, and while it can be characterized as "on the left" it's certainly distinctly different from the socialist tradition which is very much a European invention.
