Great discussion! I think Sally hit the nail on the head when she mentioned that millennials as in most generations actually like art and admire people from the previous generations more than their own. Like we grew up with Gen X and Boomer artists. Meanwhile a lot of these Millennial artists are going to resonate with Gen more.
As far as business and politics goes Millennials are in their 30s and early 40s both business and politics usually see people reaching their stride in their 40s and 50s. There will be more business people and more politicians later. Same with film directors. Being in your early 40s that isn't enough time to develop a directing filmography that really sticks out.
Also I think the Gen X author may have missed some millennials in the famous millennial list. One of the consequences of social media being the predominant way Gen Z consumed content is that it obscures what is really influential to that generation. We as older Millennials might not even know or be aware of what Gen Z is really into because it's hidden on line TikTok/parts of social media that we don't use.
Bo Burnham for instance has a huge influence on Gen Z although a lot of his influence came on YouTube and through streaming. There are many others. Likely many that are Millennials that have a huge Gen Z following and I don't even know about them.
Lastly I think the Great Recession did effect Millennials, but also Boomer parenting as well and most of all technology. I was born in 1981 I believe my experience in a lot of ways mirrors Gen X more than younger millennials.
I graduated college in 2005 or 2004 my career type job trajectory was interrupted by the recession and effected me psychologically. But post recession by the time I was in my 30s. I found myself rather quickly well established. I also was raising a kid in my 20s, so maybe I didn't have the same LONG adolescence that a lot of millennials have experienced. Still it was my mid-30s by the time I bought a house and really started to do better career wise, same with my wife. I think that this is the case with lots of millennials. Part of that was the fact that I am not hugely money focused or ambitious, that seems to be a Xennial carryover from gen-X.
Overall I think a defining characteristics of Millennials is this erroneous feeling they are doing poorly, or behind other generations. There is this certain palpable amount of anxiety amongst Millennials. This is related to the less favorable housing market they are in and also ignorance of a lot of different financial factors from the past that limited the Boomer generation more than Millennials think. This is especially true for Millennials that grew up in middle class households. Millennials are doing absolutely fine.
