8 of the Most Fantastic Music Videos From One of My Favorite Filmmakers

Music videos used to be a much bigger deal before YouTube ate up all media!

So back in my ultra-film obsessive, DVD-collecting days of my college years *gasp* 20 years ago, one of my favorite series of DVDs was known as “The Directors Collection” as it featured notable music video filmmakers and collected their very best work. Seven total were made but the three in particular I most liked were Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, and Chris Cunningham.

And of course now these DVDs are largely useless since all these videos are available on YouTube. But that means that it’s now easy to share my favorites! Some of these you may have seen grace GOTD before, but they’re so good they’re worth sharing again. So here they are.

In this installment we’ll start with the best of them all, Mark Romanek, and later this month I’ll aim to showcase Gondry, Cunningham, and perhaps a few others.

Yeah, yeah, I know I’ve dropped this one a bunch of times already. What can I say? It’s one of my absolute favorites:
